The Festas de Lisboa 2017 start today, having a blast through the city! Arraiais, music concerts, grilled sardines, basil and Saint Anthony are back in town with some news. Take a look at our suggestions.
This year, besides the usual arraiais (small local festivities) at the historical neighbourhoods, the festivities will also happen in most parts of the city. In Príncipe Real will organize the Arraial Oliveira on 23rd of June. We will also count with the second Popular Solidarity Arraial in Telheiras on 2nd and 3rd of June, organized by the Cerebral Palsy Association and the Scout group of Telheiras. Also to add to your calendar the arraiais in Parque das Nações from 2nd to 4th of June, in Vila Berta from 2nd to 13th of June and in Benfica between 22nd and 25th of June. The Arraial Lisbon Pride with its 21st edition will be on the 24th of June.
These festivities are dedicated to Santo António and he won’t be forgotten during this month. Today and tomorrow we will have an International Colloquium about the devotion of Saint Anthony, and in Portugal and Brazil, including a documentary at the São Jorge Cinema, debates and music. The Musem of Santo António will open an exhibition with the title ” Cult to Saint Anthony – African images”. Throughout the month the museum will be offering guided visits.
And, of course, we will have one more year of Saint Anthony thrones, displaying on the doorstep, as a tradition, in several neighbourhoods in Lisbon on 3rd and 4th of June. However, the participants may leave the saint on its door while the festivities last. The origin of these thrones goes further back to the 18th century. After the earthquake of 1755 the church of Saint Anthony was completely destroyed and so people started to collect money to rebuild the church. With this the tradition of children asking for a penny to Saint Anthony was born.
12th of June will be held the marriages of Saint Anthony and on 13th of June we have the procession dedicated to the marriage-maker saint.
Since the Festas de Lisboa are integrated in the Iberian-american capital of culture programme, many of the concerts will be mixed with latin and warmer rhythms. On 3rd of June the Gulbenkian orchestra will perform at Praça do Comércio square, presenting works by Villa Lobos, Falla and Revueltas. The Spanish guitar player, Pablo Sáinz Villegas will perform the historic Concerto de Aranjuez by Joaquín Rodrigo. The São Jorge castle will receive from 8th of June a series of concerts mixing fado with tango, flamenco and chorinho. The concerts have free entrance, but you need to get a ticket at the castle or Museum of Fado’s ticket office.
