Lisbon, the city with (more than) seven hills, is well known for its stunning views, only possible to reach from above. You have the viewpoints in Graça, Nossa Senhora do Monte, S. Pedro de Alcântara, Santa Catarina, and the castle, just to name the best known. But there are still much more to explore and we are revealing to you a new one so you can add to your list of things to do in Lisbon. It only takes 54 steps up to the church of Santa Cruz do Castelo’s tower and here we are with another stunning view.
The church of Santa Cruz do Castelo is near Saint George castle and it is a beautiful 18th century building. Historically the first construction goes further back to the 13th century and it was built on top of what it had been once a mosque. It was then destroyed by an earthquake in 1755 and later rebuilt to become a neoclassical structure. Inside you will find some interesting objects like the statue of the Holy Trinity from the 15th century, several paintings and the statue of Saint George which was standing at the entrance of the castle, stolen and found inside an antiquary. It is used every year for the procession dedicated to Nossa Senhora da Saúde, one of the most popular processions in the city.
These last few years the church was in an urgent need for repairment and a private company, called Signinum, responsible for the conservation and management of several monuments, have taken the responsibility for the conservation work and management of the church since 2015. It is now reopened to the public with the possibility of going up the church’s tower. You can also buy a souvenir at its shop like a small replica of the tower’s bell or book a tour to get to know a bit more of its history. The money goes for the church’s conservation work.
